Anxiety and Depression for Women

Calgon, Take Me Away! When Mere Mortals Take on the Role of Superwoman

Do you remember that old commercial? The overworked, stressed-out, exhausted woman tries and tries to keep it all going, all the plates spinning, and, finally, worn out, she exclaims, “Calgon, take me away!” Her hope, I suppose, is that the bath soap will somehow renew her energy, get her a vacation, and set all things right with the world. I wish! While a good, relaxing bubble bath might be part of an overall plan to reclaim your life, sadly it’s not quite that easy. There are things that keep us tied into lives in which we are overcommitted, overworked, tired and maybe at our wits’ end.

Overloaded

In our culture, women take on a lot. Studies show that when two spouses work full time, one partner usually still does about 80% of the other things: kids, pets, house, errands. Perfectionism and a desire to do all the things and do them well can be a cruel taskmaster. It can keep us striving for things that are mostly out of reach, and we can lose our balance and ourselves.

How Can Therapy Help?

Therapy can help uncover those things that are driving us to be overloaded, keeping us locked into perfectionism or keeping us from being able to say “no.” Once we uncover the drivers and patterns that have you stuck, together we can chart a course out of this dilemma. You can still take care of your life and your loved ones, but it really is possible to do it while maintaining your equilibrium and your sanity.

Get to the Root of It All

Getting to the root of things can be an enormous help for the depression and anxiety that can go along with the “do it all” life. Sometimes, unless you do get to the bottom of things, it can be hard to let go of the rat race, to step off the hamster wheel. Things keep going as they are, at break-neck pace, until you, your mood and your health suffer. It doesn’t have to be this way. Therapy can help. Imagine sitting down with someone who is there for you (that’s a switch, right?). You feel welcome and safe, and together you examine where the pressure is coming from. Together, you chart a course out of the rat race, you feel more in control and less depressed and anxious. You have your life back. I offer a free 20-minute phone consultation, no strings attached, so you can ask questions and get some answers before you schedule that first session.
